About the Greenwood Flying Monkeys

Launching in 2026, the Greenwood Flying Monkeys are bringing a new era of summer baseball and entertainment to Greenwood and the Lakelands region.

The Flying Monkeys join the Blue Ridge League with a mission to combine highly competitive collegiate baseball, creative ballpark fun, and the kind of personality that makes Greenwood one of South Carolina’s great small cities.

The team will play its home schedule at historic Legion Field, with 20+ home dates each summer featuring theme nights, local food and drink, family activities, and plenty of surprises. Games are designed to feel like a minor league experience, paired with the relaxed charm of a summer evening at the ballpark.

Why “Flying Monkeys”?

The name is a playful nod to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, one of the most iconic stories in American pop culture. In that classic tale—now in the public domain—the flying monkeys are unforgettable characters, known for bringing energy, mischief, and excitement wherever they appear.

Greenwood has long been known as the “Emerald City,” and the Flying Monkeys embrace that identity with a sense of imagination and fun.

When exploring name ideas, one of the most common suggestions from the community was “Emeralds,” a nod to Greenwood’s baseball past. While that name is now used elsewhere in professional baseball, the Flying Monkeys offer a fresh and creative way to celebrate that same local identity—by leaning fully into the Emerald City story and making it uniquely Greenwood’s again.

What is the most exciting thing about bringing a team to Greenwood?

We’re incredibly excited to play at historic Legion Field and be part of a baseball tradition that runs deep in this community. The opportunity to share the stadium with a strong American Legion program and take the field where the Greenwood Braves and Greenwood Pirates once played makes this a special place to build something new. It’s a chance to honor that history while creating a great experience for today’s fans.
