Flying Monkeys Finish Strong In Impressive First Season

The Greenwood Flying Monkeys made an immediate impact in their first season in the Blue Ridge League, finishing third in league play among eight teams and posting the best finish of the league’s three South Carolina clubs.

Greenwood closed the regular season with a 15-10 record, finishing behind only the Queen City Corndogs and Carolina Disco Turkeys in the league standings.

It was an especially impressive finish considering the Flying Monkeys had to overcome a slow start before emerging as one of the league’s strongest teams as the summer progressed.

The first-year club also quickly found support in Greenwood.

More than 1,000 fans packed Legion Field for the Flying Monkeys’ Opening Night, providing an early glimpse of the enthusiasm surrounding the team. Another crowd of more than 1,000 turned out for the July 3 home game, while strong crowds throughout the summer helped establish Flying Monkeys baseball as a new part of the Greenwood community.

The combination of winning baseball, enthusiastic crowds and strong community support made the inaugural season a successful foundation for the franchise.

Greenwood also finished ahead of fellow South Carolina clubs Joanna and Spartanburg County in the final league standings, giving the Flying Monkeys the top record among the Blue Ridge League’s three Palmetto State teams.

With one season now in the books, the Flying Monkeys will look to build on a memorable debut when baseball returns to Legion Field in 2027.

The first summer proved one thing quickly: the Flying Monkeys have found a home in Greenwood.
